THIRTY

Theo is out for the day, and the office, despite nearly everyone being present, feels empty without him there.

Lifeless.

It’s alarming, the way I miss him when he’s gone. I spent the better part of the morning convincing myself otherwise before I finally had to cave to reality.

It wasn’t always like this, was it? It’s not rare for him to spend days outside the office, going to in-person meetings across the state and in the city, but now it feels . . .

Different.

It’s as I’m walking back to my desk after lunch with Savannah (definitely not a stupid, idiotic way to feel closer to Theo. Definitely not) that I notice Theo’s door is cracked just a bit. My belly flips for a single, stupid moment as I think maybe he got back before I remember he texted me less than an hour ago, asking me to email him a file when I got back to the office.

Furthermore, I definitely shut the door before I left. Quietly, I walk to my desk, gently placing my bag on my chair but not stopping to take my coat off before tiptoeing closer to the door.

Through the crack, I see him.

Warren is in Theo’s office.

Warren is in Theo’s office, the door mostly closed, no one around to see. I watch for a few moments, but he’s putting things back, straightening papers as if to hide his misdeeds.

He’s on his way out, it seems, so I push open the door, startling him.

“Can I help you with something?” I ask, raising an eyebrow at Warren as he moves to where I’m standing. He puts a hand to his chest like he’s been spooked before shaking his head with a smile.

“Oh, it’s just you.”

“I said, can I help you with something?” Crossing my arms on my chest, I block the exit.

Theo has come to the understanding that Warren is absolutely planning something devious, but I don’t think he’s all in on the fact that Warren is an evil villain in this story. Fortunately for him, I most definitely am.

“No need to get defensive,” he says with a chuckle in a pipe down, little girl type of way that makes me want to punch him in the fucking face.

“No, I very much think I need to, since you’re snooping in my boss's office while he’s not around and I was out on lunch.”

“I wasn’t snooping. I was just looking for something.” I tip my head to the side and furrow my brow as if I’m confused.

“I know you have a fourth-grade understanding of grammar and vocabulary, but snooping is pretty much defined by looking for something. Especially if you’re doing it when no one is around and you don’t want anyone to know about it.”

He steps forward, and I should feel nervous since every single part of my ick has always told me he’s the kind of person to get violent given the right circumstances, but I’m feeling righteous right now.

This man truly thinks he can come into this
